Loop Road Roundabouts Virtual Public Information Office

The purpose of this project is to reduce congestion and improve safety for all corridor users. For drivers, this will mean improving traffic flow during during peak hours. For pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly those along the stretch of road from Nancy Street to Back Loop Road, this will mean safer road crossings for the students and parents walking or biking to the Floyd Dryden Middle School.
Two intersections on Mendenhall Loop Road will be converted into roundabouts: one at the access road to Floyd Dryden Middle School and the other at Stephen Richards Memorial Drive. The roundabouts will allow for more continuous traffic movement, reducing congestion and improving safety for all corridor users.
Additionally, the multi-use pathway improvements will match existing grades as close as possible and accommodate improvements to drainage. The end result will be a reconstructed 10-foot-wide paved and separated pathway, with offsets from the roadway that vary between five and seventeen feet.
For some periods during this project, traffic at the following locations will be stop controlled and left turns on to Mendenhall Loop Road will not be allowed from these side streets. Detours will be in place when necessary to help route traffic around the construction.
Please watch for and follow the direction from construction signs and flaggers when present throughout the construction work zone. There will be temporary disruptions to multi-use pathway access; pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to use the project shuttle to travel through the construction work zone. SECON is contracting with a local transportation company to provide this service. CDC and State of Alaska recommendations will be rigorously followed regarding protecting the public and employees from risk of COVID-19 infection in the transportation of individuals on the project shuttle.
As always, please use caution when traveling in work zones.
Construction is anticipated to begin on June 1 and estimated to be completed the end of September. Please see the project schedule page for more information.
